HOUSTON (May 2, 2005) - José Menéndez, national director for emerging domestic real estate markets for Stewart Title Co., has been appointed by the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals (NAHREP) as one of 10 new directors for its national board.
NAHREP is the nation's fastest-growing Hispanic trade association with representation from nearly every sector within the real estate industry.
"I am proud to help this influential organization work toward the goal of expanding homeownership opportunities for Hispanic families throughout the country," said Menéndez. "With NAHREP's 14,000 members and Stewart Title's 7,800 policy-issuing offices and agencies, we have a real possibility to help close the homeownership gap, which is critical to the future of a strong America - building one neighborhood at a time."
Menéndez was sworn in at an April 25 installation ceremony at the group's third Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.
"José well represents the integrity of our company and our commitment to this market," said Malcolm Morris, chairman, Stewart Title Co., and chairman and co-chief executive officer, Stewart Information Services Corp. "Homeownership is a key investment to begin building wealth in the Hispanic community and we want to assist in qualifying more families to achieve the American dream.
"We congratulate José for this recognition and are committed to support him in his service to NAHREP and its constituents," said Morris.
Menéndez and the other NAHREP board members immediately went to work, receiving a White House briefing from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Alphonso Jackson on Aptil 26.
Menéndez has experience both in the real estate and title industry, and in the governmental sector. Based in San Antonio, Texas, he currently is in his third term in the Texas House of Representatives from District 124 in Bexar County, serving on the Appropriations, House Administration and Urban Affairs committees. Menéndez formerly served as a San Antonio Zoning Commissioner and as a member of the San Antonio City Council for two terms.
He previously was involved in residential real estate sales in Dallas, where he specialized in working with Hispanic homebuyers, helping them improve their credit ratings to qualify for mortgage loans. Menéndez most recently worked with commercial real estate brokers, lenders, developers and buyers in his position as a commercial sales representative for Stewart Title of San Antonio. He earned degrees in Business Administration and Latin American Studies from Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Menéndez works with Stewart's Emerging Markets Advisory Council, helping Stewart offices meet the needs of its bilingual and historically underserved customers, and seeking strategic relationships and business partnerships with trade associations, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, lenders and real estate brokers to improve homeownership with traditionally underserved buyer segments.
