Stewart Announces Changes on Board of Directors

HOUSTON (Jan. 4, 2002) - Stewart Information Services Corp. (Stewart) (NYSE-STC) announced that Gov. John P. LaWare has been elected to its board of directors. LaWare, who has served as a Stewart advisory director since 1995, is replacing Martin J. Whitman, who resigned for personal reasons.

LaWare served on the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System from 1988 until 1995. A Harvard graduate, he began his banking career in 1953 at Chemical Bank in New York. During his 25 years with Chemical Bank, LaWare spent several years as a senior lending officer before organizing its holding company operations and marketing divisions. He also served as chairman, CEO and director of Shawmut National Corp., a super regional bank holding company.
